Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes Erik ten Hag’s side are not going to Aston Villa with the determination to win.
The game at Villa Park ended in a goalless draw, although the Red Devils almost secured victory when Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick hit the crossbar, but Scholes does not see his former team visiting the game determined to secure three points.
“The issue for United is going to a tough stadium under a lot of pressure,” Scholes told SuperSport after the game. “I never felt like they went there to try and win. It was more of a self-serving strategy than anything else.”
“But from everything we said before the game, United are a difficult team to play against today and you have to factor in the midweek fixtures – Villa were given a huge boost from the win over Bayern Munich, with a great atmosphere. They were struggling today, you could see they had to fight hard.”
“For Manchester United, it’s a difficult game to go to Europe ยูฟ่าเบท on Thursday, a difficult game against Porto with 10 men, so I think it reflects the midweek situation for both clubs.”
Man Utd have only scored five goals in seven matches this campaign and Scholes has questioned the quality of the Red Devils’ forward line, including summer signing Zirkzee.
Scholes added: “In forward areas especially, I just don’t think the quality is there.
“We go back to the most successful teams, they’re capable of scoring goals. What have we scored? Five goals in seven games.
